"F
THE PEOPLE"
Once upon a time in deepest underground Los Angeles there was a
crew called Unity Committee. This crew grew in strength to spawn
2 separate and distinctly different acts - Jurassic 5, and Darkleaf.
After a couple of self-produced releases and an appearance on the
acclaimed Beneath The Surface compilation, Darkleaf have gathered
to release their brand of left coast hip hop on Ubiquity Records.
5 members - Longevity, Jahli (both producers and lyricists) Kemit,
Metalogic (both lyricists), and Mixmaster Wolf (DJ, and lead vocalist
for the Breakestra) - compose the crew that view themselves as some
of the darkest leaves on the tree.
Inspired by Sun Ra, Chick Corea, and Jimi Hendrix, the sound of
Dark Leaf is reminiscence of old school Public Enemy. Intense and
chaotic hip hop, collage rap, head-knodding beats, and spoken word.
Guests include P.E.A.C.E. from Freestyle Fellowship, and St Mark
from Brothers Manifesto. As pillars of the LA underground scene
Dark Leaf are involved in the weekly Root Down live/DJ session and
recently produced tracks for the score of Kevin Fitzgeralds underground
hip hop movie "Freestyle" featuring Mos Def, Freestyle
Fellowship and Divine Styler which showed at the LA Independent
Film Festival.
