"REWIND
12""
Jack
Costanzo was on the original recording of Nat King Coles Calypso
Blues in the 1950s. He recently re-recorded the song for inclusion
on his new Cubop album Scorching the Skins. Kirk Degiorgio
takes that version and delivers a storming uptempo funky house
version in a Larry Levan style goes to the Bahamas style! Using
a looping bass line, disco beat with congas, timbales, cowbells
plus live percussion (including some good old fashioned handclaps),
clavinet and rhodes, plus the dubbed out vocals of Quino (of reggae
superstars Big Mountain) gives the mix a very Carribean feel fitting
with the original spirit of the song.
This is not the first time this song has been covered. Jazz trainspotters
may also recognize that it was one of the tracks covered by Sahib
Shihab on the highly collectible Companionship album, a must-have
for fans of 1960s European jazz.
On the flipside is the West coasts unstoppable music machine Madlib
(of Stones Throw records) recording under his Yesterdays New Quintet
guise. He gives up a chunky mid-tempo instrumental hip hop-style
cover of the Ohio Players Heaven Must Be Like This.
This is a brand new track from the YNQ crew that you wont
find on the Angles Without Edges CD which was undoubtably
one of the instrumental hip hop moments of 2001. Fender rhodes,
vibes (vibraphone), electric bass, Kalimba, Arp Odyssey, Arp String
Ensemble, 8 Track Synth, SP12 & MPC 2000, drums, percussion,
electric guitar, Electric Clavinet E7, Wurlitzer electric piano,
Omnichord, and the EPS Ensoniq Workstation are just some of the
tools Madlib puts to use to create his YNQ magic.
These two killer covers pave the way for the arrival of the Ubiquity
Rewind! compilation due to be released in April 2002 which takes
famous original tunes and underground gems and brings them bang-up-to-
date in the best possible taste with cover versions, remixes and
re-edits.
