“Mishaps is definitely happening, and will make you a soul believer.”
EARPLUG

NOSTALGIA 77 - THE GARDEN

Imagine Breakestra hanging with Cinematic Orchestra, or RJD2 teaming up with the Ethiopiques and you're close to the sound of Nostalgia 77. Nostalgia 77 aka Ben Lamdin first burst onto the scene with his heavy, new funk based sound. The maturity and sensitivity of Nostalgia 77's music belie his relatively recent step into beat-making. Influences are wide ranging; the drums of funk and hip-hop are strong guiding forces, as is the melody of jazz and the atmosphere of psychedelic rock. Having consistently refined the quality of his musical selection while DJing for a number of years, the fuller musical expression of actually making his own music was inevitable. Unleashing some club friendly tracks on Tru Thoughts' hugely influential 7Sevens imprint in 2002, he eventually followed up with his seminal debut LP entitled 'Songs For My Funeral' in February 2004, exploring a more downtempo and jazzier style. The success of his album encouraged him to progress with this style for his second album 'The Garden'. A style which he describes as "a combination of soul and jazz composition with computer based production techniques".

QUANTIC SOUL ORCHESTRA - PUSHIN' ON
************(ONLY AVAILABLE ON CD)

"A dance-floor-filling salute to the tough-bumpin' sound of the Meters and James Brown's JBs, where go-to vocalist Alice Russell serves as Holland's Vicki Anderson in stylishly soulful fashion."
NOW MAGAZINE (FIVE STAR REVIEW)

"Putting something back" is Will Holland’s reason for starting The Quantic Soul Orchestra. After releasing electronic/studio-based albums as Quantic he wanted to work on a strictly live project, to “put the funk back in it”, and to pay homage to a genre that continues to heavily influence his releases. QSO is his chance to record and produce an album with creative and like minded musicians. The Orchestra make killer funk with enough bottom-end to burn any dance floor, and the album features several tracks with the super powerful vocals of Alice Russell.

THE BAMBOOS - STEP IT UP

Heavyweight funk act The Bamboos hail from Australia. Their first 7” single was limited to a pressing of only 300 copies but the tracks “Eel Oil” b/w “Blackfoot” quickly made waves around the world. Based on this first piece of limited-edition wax, funk-connoisseurs and producers Kenny Dope and Keb Darge signed The Bamboos for a single on their Kay Dee record label. “Tighten Up” b/w “Voodoo Doll” cemented their reputation amongst the global funk community and saw the band make new friends with fans of heavy dance floor beats. The Bamboos "Step It up" album collects the first single, as well as new versions of the Kay Dee-released tracks. Also included are exclusive tracks featuring Tru Thoughts vocalist Alice Russell and a cover version of UK Broken Beat anthem "Transcend Me" (originally by Afronaught). The Bamboos sound is most heavily influenced by The Meters, James Brown, Eddie Bo, Grant Green, Melvin Sparks, Jimmy Smith, Reuben Wilson, Boogaloo Joe Jones, Idris Mohummad and other funk originators from the late 1960s through the early 1970s.

QUANTIC - AN ANNOUNCEMENT TO ANSWER

"Before the album's nine tracks conclude, he's touched down with a multitude of tempos and styles without abandoning a sense that all these songs belong together... 4 1/2 stars."
-
URB

“A sweet return to funky-ass form… worldly, dirty and pretty addictive.”

- WEEKLY DIG

Intricately produced, the album delivers hip hop, Puerto Rican, jazz, funk and soul sounds with a 21st Century twist that’s friendly to ears and sound systems alike. While he’s a humble character, Holland is no typical DJ-turned-electronic-producer. He recorded himself on guitar, bass, percussion, piano and accordion in Brighton. He worked with his father on banjo in Wales, adding musicians from multiple sessions in Puerto Rico and the West Coast. The majority of the editing was carried out on a laptop across multiple time zones en route to DJ gigs.

SPANKY WILSON & THE QUANTIC SOUL ORCHESTRA - I'M THANKFUL

Since she burst onto the scene in the late 1960s, Spanky Wilson has performed and recorded with the likes of Marvin Gaye, Sammy Davis Jr., Lalo Schifrin, Jimmy Smith, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Pretty Purdie and Willie Bobo. Renowned as a soul, blues and jazz singer on both sides of the Atlantic, she has consistently released quality music for the past four decades, collaborating with some of the most talented and respected producers of the day. She has released seven albums under her own name, and tracks like "Sunshine of Your Love" and "You" have become DJ and collector favorites worldwide.

I’m Thankful sees her team up with Will Holland of The Quantic Soul Orchestra to produce a stunning collection of 21st Century jazz, funk, big band and soul music. Will "Quantic" Holland and Wilson first collaborated in 2004 on two tracks for the third Quantic album, Mishaps Happening. Inspired by this positive experience, they decided to write an album together. Months of work culminated in a week-long recording session in Los Angeles and Holland recruited some of the funk-soul scene’s finest players to help him realize his vision, including Todd Simon on trumpet and Phil Ranelin on trombone.

TM JUKE - FORWARD

Stepping out with the album he’s always wanted to make 27 year old Al Cowan, aka TM Juke, is firmly pushing Forward. He has also produced the Alice Russell albums and more remixes than you can shake a stick at. This album almost didn’t happen. In fact it wasn’t for a sudden change of heart it would have sounded completely different. Expertly combining the benefits of a comprehensive musical education with his reactionary love of laptop-based music, Cowan has quickly established himself as a prodigious UK songwriter and arranger. He's a broadminded and captivating DJ and an exceptionally talented producer, and a full-blown member of the Tru Thoughts stable. He plays bass, guitar, sampler and some keys on Forward. He also enlisted some great UK talent behind the mic, including long-time collaborator Alice Russell and up and coming UK act Elmore Judd.

LANU - THIS IS MY HOME
* (ONLY AVAILABLE ON CD)

With his Antipodean deep funk outfit The Bamboos, Ferguson has recorded for such respected independent labels as Freestyle, Soul Force, Kay Dee and released an album on Tru Thoughts/Ubiquity. And his passion for DJing has taken him all over Europe and Asia. Ferguson drew on these global experiences for the new album, assimilating and incorporating sights, sounds, themes and friends into an hour-long Australasian future soul opus. “Dis-Information” is built around a punchy Moog bassline, angular Rhodes chords and an insistent break. “Mother Earth” teams up UK-based Quantic and California-based Stones Throw vocalist Aloe Blacc for a broken-meets-Afro-beat workout that calls out to people to respect the planet or face the consequences.

NOSTALGIA 77 - EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN
****************(ONLY AVAILABLE ON CD)

“I think a lot people find jazz intimidating and inaccessible and this hasn't been helped by certain musicians trying to rarify jazz, canonize it, and turn it in to high culture. Before jazz was a technical music it was an emotional music. For me then the challenge isn't about making jazz music relevant it’s just making relevant music. Music with emotion that speaks honestly to the listener will always be relevant.” - Benedic Lamdin, Nostalgia 77.

On “Everything Under The Sun” Lamdin, the driving force behind Nostalgia 77, teams up with vocalists to create a beautiful cosmic-tinged jazz album that sounds as much classic, spiritual, Impulse-influenced music as it does Cinematic Orchestra and Koop. “It’s music with roots in jazz but with hands reaching out to anyone who wants to take them . . . Imagine if Portishead did a jazz record?” Says Lamdin.
