Johnny Malone met Allan Barnes while studying at Howard University in the 1960's. Taught by Donald Byrd, they were also classmates with Donny Hathaway, Leroy Hutson, and Angela Winbush. Barnes was already a member of the The Blackbyrds. When the two friends formed Malone Barnes and Spontaneous Simplicity (named after the tune by Sun-Ra) the collaboration yielded Freedom Serenade, an album of super spacey and spiritual jazz funk. Released in limited quantity in 1976, on their Humpin’ International label, this rare album bears the hallmarks of contemporaries like the Blackbyrds, the Mizell Brothers and DC neighbors Oneness of Ju-Ju.

Kirk Degiorgio returns with an album that flows effortlessly across

The Lotus Blooms
Detroit-based Jeremy Ellis moved to Puerto Rico to create an album
marrying traditional Bomba and Plena rhythms with Detroit-schooled
dance music. After three months, the keyboard maestro and golden-toned
vocalist discovered that the living in Puerto Rico ain’t
so easy. On his way home he lost two computers, all of his recordings,
half of his recording advance, and his passport (and possibly
part of his mind). Fortunately, Ellis returned in one piece with
the musical knowledge and resolve to create “The Lotus Blooms,”
an album of insatiable future funk grounded in Detroit and peppered
with a Puerto-Rican persuasion.

The Bamboos
Step It Up
Heavyweight funk act The Bamboos hail from Australia.
Their first 7” single was limited to a pressing of only
300 copies but the tracks “Eel Oil” b/w “Blackfoot”
quickly made waves around the world.
Based on this first piece of limited-edition wax, funk-connoisseurs
and producers Kenny Dope and Keb Darge signed The Bamboos for
a single on their Kay Dee record label. “Tighten Up”
b/w “Voodoo Doll” cemented their reputation amongst
the global funk community and saw the band make new friends with
fans of heavy dance floor beats. UK based Tru Thoughts signed
the act for an album and Ubiquity picked-up the record for North
America. This will be the fourth record to be released under the
Tru Thoughts/Ubiquity arrangement following on from The Quantic
Soul Orchestra, Nostalgia 77, and Quantic album releases.
