BADMARSH

As a 28 year old London native, the man known as Badmarsh has witnessed the progressive metamorphosis of the British club scene from Rare Groove to Breakbeat House to today's current Jungle expansions. His experience also incorporates his Middle Eastern background and participation in a distinct music culture that has developed among England's Asian and Middle Eastern emigres. Joining Cornershop, Nitin Sawhney and Black Star Liner, Badmarsh has developed a distinct sonic flavor for his mostly drum n' bass productions. His name signifies his position as an artist. Badmarsh literally means "black sheep," a distinction which has helped to galvanize his commitment as an artist. Ubiquity recognized his talent for creating all manner of excellent breakbeat-based dance music and the partnership was immediately sealed. Why is it the Differences EP? Because of the palette of sounds the listener has to draw from giving you a complete picture of the urban UK dance scene. From old-school-ish Jungle with a Ragga influence to beautiful jazz drum n' bass that recalls Roni Size and Doc Scott to Badmarsh's wicked blend of tabla and Indian vocal samples--get ready for the UK's next prolific production breakthrough! He's stealthy, smooth and knows his breaks, Badmarsh is here to let it roll! (And check out his remix work on the Better Daze Remix Project!).

FROM THE PRESS:

"As drum and bass finds an increasingly larger audience in the US. labels such as Ubiquity have taken an interest in in releasing this music domestically, and a superb recent instance is the Differences EP by BadMarsh. It's a rollicking drum and bass journey which alights in territory governed by such d'n'b regulars as Roni Size and Source Direct. The last year has seen the steady rise of the Bay Area as a hotbed of musical activity of the electronic and hip hop persuasion, and that movement is only going to grow with the help of Ubiquity."

"Badmarsh's Differences EP flies in and rescues yawning clubbers from the monotony. Londoner M. Akberali, the brains behind the beast, borrows rounded bass and percussion sounds, sitar samples, and lilting, exotic vocals from his Indian heritage to spin flowing pan-cultural bombtracks. The EP goes to show exactly what a DJ/Producer can do with an open mind."

"British drum and bass producer Badmarsh allows his electro influences to come to the fore on the Differences EP, which brings us into territory of such UK experimentalists as Source Direct, Ed Rush and Hidden Agenda. ‘Tribal Warfare' is a slingshot on wax, littered with cryptic vocal samples, while the title track is a sparser, jazzier affair with rolling breakbeats clearing a wide path behind them. ‘Goa Funk' takes its name from the Indian island that's home to the psychedelic trance movement, but bears little resemblance to that sound, drawing instead on sprightly, tripping breakbeats, an expansive bass line and time stretched samples from raga tracks."
