PNUT:
Greg,
Pnut Galinsky was born in Santa Monica on July 22, 1971. The diverse
influences of his family (his mother is from Burma, his father from
Lithuania) and childhood growing up in Southern California fostered
his self-expression and were the foundation upon which his creativity
grew. From an early age, Galinsky was influenced by skateboarding,
surfing and living near the ocean. In his formative years, he was
inspired by the cutting edge innovations of funk,soul,reggae,jazz,hip-hop,and
punk rock. His earliest formal art experience was at the prestigious
Otis Parson School of Design, where he gathered the skills he needed,
but left to pursue his own dream of creating the Junkies clothing
line. After seven successful seasons of Junkies, Galinsky founded
his 1971 line and further explored clothing and lifestyle product
design.
Galinsky also returned to fine art painting. One day as he was using
a piece of glass as a palette, he turned it over to discover an
original piece of art. He began a series of paintings on glass windows,
a medium on which his self-expression has flourished. His works
find him primarily concerned with structure and composition; the
architectural aspects of composition are important to his efforts
to communicate a sense of space and openness. Through mixed techniques
and media, and on scales ranging from the very small to the oversized,
Galinsky always strives to capture the spirit of all that he loves
in each work.
In addition to painting, Galinsky currently continues to design
for his 1971 Gallery product line, which includes the clothing label
Makossa and lifestyle product line Easy Living and Human Resources.
Other design work includes projects with Barney's, Levis Japan,
FTC skate boards, Verizon Wireless, and footwear company Gravis.
As part of a group of international artists, Galinsky has been a
co-curator of art and design shows in collaboration with the Eames
family, Adidas and other groups and organizations. He currently
resides in San Francisco.
